Please note that the scales shown in this image have been wetted slightly to give an idea of the grain / colour once finished.

NOTE: Spalt is a stage of decay and whilst each piece is different the more interesting pieces will typically have areas with about the same consistency as balsa end grain. This is not considered a defect as once stabilised these produce stunning handles when worked by a skilled craftsman. A very challenging material to work though so only recomended for the more experienced knife maker.
