A pair of Selected Cheshire Bog Oak Knife Handle Scales

Bog Oak comes from trees that have been burried in the peat bogs and preserved from decay by the acidic and anerobic bog conditions. The chemistry of the bog reacts with the wood and transforms its colour. With oak this will range from dark brown to jet black.

Bog oak represents the early stages of fossilisation of the wood and whilst it is still fully workable, when dry it is typically around 30% heavier and denser than regular oak.

Whilst we have no exact carbon dating information for these boards we know of other trees excavated from the same area that have been dated at around 3,500 - 3,700 years old.

A very rare and visually powerful timber.

Typical moisture content around 12%

Minimum size 12mm x 45mm x 135mm

The scales shown on the right of this image have been wetted slightly to give an idea of the grain / colour once finished, and the scales on the left have been kept natural.
