A pair of Selected Maple Burr Knife Handle Scales

Maple Burr or Burl is created by an unusual growth on the trees which result in highly figured stock. Maple Burr is often darker in colour than Maple wood, yellow ochre to brown, with many whorls and patterns. Works surpisingly well for a burr and takes a good finish making it one of the less challenging burrs to work with and achieve stunning results.

We have a suply of prime stock from British Columbia and Oregon.

Typical moisture content around 10%

Minimum size 7mm x 45mm x 135mm

The scales shown in this image have been wetted slightly to give an idea of the grain / colour once finished.

The beauty of Burl wood is its radical and unpredictable nature. Along with the dramatic cats paw, birds eye and figured patterns come small fissures, bark inclusions, voids and other such burl characteristics. These attributs are not considered defects. Working with Burl wood is both challenging and rewarding. You should understand and accept these challenges as the rewards are almost always worth the effort.
